About Camp

What is Urban Service Camp

Urban Service Camp (USC) is a community service camp and much more. Get ready to do fun and educational service projects, workshops, and games that introduce campers ages 13-18 to the benefits of helping their community and the barriers to doing it. Campers make new friends from all over Greater Birmingham. USC utilizes Birmingham’s amazing desire to help others to introduce youth to community needs and service. Youth come away from camp with an experience of building a community, new relationships, and an empowered self. Click here for what to expect.

Are focused on introducing youth to Birmingham and the support it needs from volunteers and nonprofits. Campers will learn about three organizations that serve Birmingham and help with a community service project at each site. Afternoon workshops will have campers talking about the benefits to yourself and the community by volunteering and learn about the barriers to helping others. Throughout the afternoon, fun games like Scatter Ball and Elbow Tag and social connection activities will be played in the gym and outside at the park. On Thursday, campers will help prepare and serve a community cookout and have a talent show that night!

For those that have participated in USC  before, USAC will give campers an in-depth look at how Birmingham communities are being revitalized. During the mornings, campers will work on a service project. In the afternoons, campers will examine communities like Woodlawn and Avondale and experts will share their insight into reviving communities through housing, businesses, and community efforts. Teams of campers will be tasked with developing a revitalization plan for a community and examine the strengths and weaknesses of different ways of doing it. Teams will present their revitalization plan and will have completed a service project by the end of camp!
